San Diego area fires: an update
NBC Channel 7, San Diego, California, put out a summary of the status of wildfires ravaging the greater San Diego area and updated it before 7 this evening. A “sea breeze” that started yesterday and that is bringing cooler, moisture-laden air to the region is expected to aid fire-fighting efforts. Cocos Fire – San Marcos, Escondido:
- The fire has burned 2,520 acres and was 70% contained 9:15 am today. Full containment of the fire is expected on Sunday.
- One man was arrested on suspicion of looting homes.
- Questhaven, Harmony Grove and parts of Elfin Forest in San Marcos and neighboring unincorporated areas of the county have been evacuated and an evacuation shelter has been set up at Mission Hills High School.
- The San Marcos County Library opened this morning at 7 am as a recovery center for residents affected by the Cocos Fire. The center will offer people information on cleaning up their homes, obtaining permits, and other fire resources. The center was open until 5 p.m.
Las Pulgas Fire:
- The fire had burned 15,000 acres as of today (Saturday) at 11 am.
- The fire is only 40% contained.
Tomahawk Fire:
- The fire had consumed 6,500 acres as of today (Saturday) at 11 am.
- The fire is 75% contained.
Combat Fire (formerly Talega Fire [also known as San Mateo Fire]):
- As of today (Saturday) at 11 am, 1,000 acres had been consumed, and the fire was only 25% contained.
- The evacuation orders for Camp San Mateo (62 Area), Camp Las Pulgas (43 Area), Camp Las Flores (41 Area), Camp Margarita (33 Area), Marine Air Support Squadron 3 (32 Area) and Camp Vado Del Rio (25 Area) remain in effect.
- The shelter in place orders for Camp Horno (53 Area), Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton (24 Area) and Camp Chappo (22/23 Area) remain in effect.
Poinsettia Fire, San Diego Complex – Carlsbad:
- The fire was 100% contained as of 5 pm today (Saturday) with 600 acres burned.
- The fire started in the area of El Camino Real and Poinsettia Lane. Eight single family homes were destroyed or damaged; 3 other homes sustained minor damage; an 18-unit apartment building was destroyed; an 18-unit apartment building was damaged; 2 commercial buildings were destroyed or substantially damaged, and 1 modular building was destroyed.
- All evacuations were lifted at 6:30 pm Thursday, but as of Friday morning, there were three points at which Carlsbad Police were still controlling access to residents for safety reasons: Black Rail Poinsettia, Black Rail Sapphire and Poinsettia Brigantine.
- The damage is estimated at $22.5 million and counting.
- The Carlsbad Police Department has established a Tip Hotline for the Poinsettia Fire. Highway Fire in Bonsall, Fallbrook area:
- The fire has consumed 386 acres and was 95% contained as of 9:50 pm Friday.
- The fire started at Old Highway 395 north of White Lilac, and no homes were damaged or destroyed.
- Heavy fuels have not burned since the Gopher Canyon Fire in 1970.
River Fire in Oceanside:
- The fire was 100% contained as of Thursday.
- The fire has burned 105 acres and is contained to the riverbed.
- One man was arrested, accused of attempting to fuel the fire.
Bernardo Fire:
- The fire has burned 1,548 acres and was 100% contained as of 7:40 am Friday.
- The fire threatened 50 structures.
- The fire started at Nighthawk Lane, southwest of Rancho Bernardo.
- Cal Fire has reported 3 injuries.
- Evacuations have been lifted.
- The official cause of the fire is a backhoe working on a construction project.
