Trans-Sierra highways are open for the Memorial Day Weekend!

Serial 000002094

Just in time for the Memorial Day Weekend, three trans-Sierra highways that have been closed by snow were opened today! Although low snowpacks allowed crews to clear them early on, spring storms shut the roads down again in the high country. The Caltrans crews opened Highway 4 and 108, and Yosemite National Park opened Highway 120, the Tioga Road.

Besides these three, Highway 89 through Lassen Volcanic National Park was opened, as was Highway 89 at Monitor Pass at Lake Tahoe.

As SFGate.com states:

The opening of Tioga Road over Tioga Pass means a fantastic array of landscape will be accessible for the holiday weekend. Tenaya Lake in Yosemite, set high along Tioga Road, is one of the state’s prettiest lakes you can reach by car. The road leads past Tuolumne Meadows <my image is above>, the trailhead for Lembert Dome and then over Tioga Pass for access to the eastern Sierra, Mono Lake area and beyond.

The single major route that is still closed by snow is Minaret Pass/Highway 203 at the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area in the Eastern Sierra. So access to the Devil’s Postpile and the headwaters of the San Joaquin River is still not possible.

For information about the latest highway conditions, call (800) 427- 7623 or go to http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi.
