A gentle reminder from Canada…

I had to chuckle this week when I received an email from my friend Beth in Canada, whom I first met as a child when our families camped together in Allegany State Park, in New York (the state, not the “town”). Ahhhhh… the Wikipedia page linked above is like a flashback (I am one of those folks who cannot blame his deteriorating mental condition on drugs :-) ), with a photo of the stone Administration Building and lodge, taken across Red House Lake. But I digress…

Beth (who apparently forgives me for putting her on my mailing list) sent me a small slideshow, prefaced with the comment, “Bill, you have been sending us pictures of the ocean and ‘spring.’ Here are some pictures after the mammoth storm.” Beth told me that *her* part of Ontario Province (and no, she does *not* live on Hudson Bay) got 2 feet of snow from the roughly 2-day storm this week. I let her know that even as far south as one of my old homes, Columbus, OH, folks received 20 inches of snow from the storm. Beth gleefully added that the weather turned to freezing rain, after the snow.

I was glad to see that Beth is still as kind as I remember her, from the very full bird feeders with at least 6 inches of snow on top. Even with all of the food, the birds that she photographed looked “none too happy” and were very “puffed up” to stay warm.

What can I say to ease the pain? Firstly, that spring is coming. I promise. It is already here in my part of California (Bay Area). Secondly, that we also have snow in California, and when we want to see it, we know when and where to go! :-) I enjoyed the comments this week from my youngest brother, who in his recent visit to California played in the snow and saw the sunset on the Pacific Ocean, all in the same day, as I did years ago. There are not a lot of places where you can do that, without hopping onto a plane.

So, Beth, thanks very much for writing and for the photos! It is always great to hear from you. Spring is coming, even for all of the folks in the American Northeast, who got flooding rain from the storm, instead of snow. Beth, I am getting over 10% of my Web site traffic from Canada, and I know that there are not that many folks in your family :-) . I am always delighted to hear from “our Neighbors to the North!” I hope that all of the snow melts soon!
