Dave Brubeck, jazz pianist and composer, dead at 91

The Santa Cruz Sentinel has published a slideshow of 44 photos from the life of Dave Brubeck, an extraordinary jazz pianist and composer, who died today at age 91. He would have been 92 tomorrow. Brubeck was born in the San Francisco Bay Area city of Concord, California and grew up in Ione.

Brubeck died Wednesday morning of heart failure after being stricken while on his way to a cardiology appointment with his son Darius, said his manager Russell Gloyd.

If “a picture is worth a thousand words,” then 44 photos are worth… well, do the math! :-)

Of course, being a saxophonist (some of you know that about me), I enjoyed the alto work of Paul Desmond (born in San Francisco), the sax man of the original Dave Brubeck Quartet.

I heard Dave Brubeck play, live, with his sons, at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in the 1970s, while I was in graduate school there. I am glad to have had the opportunity.

Enjoy the slideshow. The one thing that struck me about ALL of the photos was the happiness of a passionate jazz “great,” delighted to be doing a job that he loved!
