Grateful Dead Archive to open June 29 at UC Santa Cruz…

… to which many young people will say, “The Who?” :-)

To which many Baby Boomers will say…

“No, that was ANOTHER band!” :-)

The University of California, Santa Cruz (Mascot: Sammy the <banana> Slug :-) ) will celebrate the public opening of The Grateful Dead Archive  at the McHenry Library with an event from 1-4 PM on June 29. According to The Santa Cruz Sentinel:

Visitors will explore the archive’s inaugural exhibit, “A Box of Rain: Archiving the Grateful Dead Phenomenon,” in the Brittingham Family Foundation Dead Central, the new exhibition space devoted to the archives. Members of the band announced in 2008 that they would donate their extensive collection to UCSC.

Curated by Grateful Dead Archivist Nicholas Meriwether, the exhibit showcases major treasures from the collection, ranging from the iconic “Skeleton & Roses” poster created by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley, to fan decorated envelopes for mail order ticket requests, to Jerry Garcia‘s annotated lyric sheets. The archive documents the Dead’s creativity and influence in contemporary music history from 1965 to 1995, including the phenomena of the Deadheads, its extensive social network of devoted fans.

Now, researchers who are interested in the 1960s counterculture, cultural history, and many other areas related to the Grateful Dead phenomenon will have access to original source materials in the UCSC Library’s Special Collections.

Admission to the June 29 event will be free, and much of the event will take place on the south lawn of the library and feature music from Moonalice, a Northern California band known for its ties to the Grateful Dead. Light refreshments will be available.

Parking will be available in both the Performing Arts and Hahn Services lots. Temporary parking permits may be purchased for $3 from attendants in these lots.

As I said in October of 2007: “Visiting Santa Cruz is, in some ways, like slipping back in time. Sometimes it seems like a city arrested in time, back in the late 60′s.” I really do love the place!

Enjoy the opening!
