Would-be robber shot and killed at San Ramon jewelry store

Maybe there is hope for California, after all.

In a culture that glorifies victims and demonizes firearms, a potential victim fought back with one.

Kibrom Bairu, 18, of Hayward entered the Gold N Treasures jewelry and coin store at 2550 San Ramon Valley Blvd. about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, just as the store was closing, with a gun and three other men. The four men confronted the store’s owner and at least one employee, one of whom drew a gun and opened fire. A shot hit Bairu, who stumbled into San Ramon Valley Boulevard and later died at San Ramon Regional Medical Center. Bairu was enrolled youth program that gave him an internship in a Union City coffee shop. The three other assailants, who remain at large, drove off in a a white, four-door, 1990s-model sedan, according to police.

Police would not say whether the owner or employee had fired the fatal shot, but said that the shooting appeared to be justified.

“It appears that the victim acted to defend against the violent felony being committed by Mr. Bairu,” said police Lt. Dan Pratt.

Bairu worked, for about a month, at Paddy’s Coffee House in Union City as part of an internship offered through Soulciety, a Hayward nonprofit group that helps youths

Everett Parvin, 61, of Dublin owns the jewelry and coin store, according to records, His daughter, Kaitlyn Parvin, 19, confirmed that Everett Parvin and his wife, who also works in the store, were in the store at the time of the shooting.

Police say jewelry store owners often have guns at hand. In Vallejo, the owner of Carillo’s Jewelry Store shot and killed a would-be robber May 7.

In Alamo, a robbery suspect and jewelry store owner were wounded in a shootout in 2009.
