Filming of “Star Trek” sequel occurring now at Lawrence Livermore Lab
This week, folks are filming some scenes for the new J.J. Abrams “Star Trek” movie at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Thinking back a few years ago when my wife and I stood on the hilltop above and watched a green laser shoot skyward from “The Lab,” I muse, “Where could be a better place to ‘beam up?'”
The crew is filming segments in the National Ignition Facility (NIF), according to Dale Kaye, president of the Livermore Valley Chamber of Commerce and a Livermore Valley film commissioner. The NIF is where scientists are using ultraviolet laser light from the world’s largest laser (how would WE know? ) to produce thermonuclear ignition at temperatures and densities similar to those in the sun.
The NIF building could house three football fields. (Presumably AFTER they would move out the equipment! )
Many local hotel rooms have been booked to accommodate the cast and crew. Good for Livermore!
The movie is scheduled to open in May of 2013 The film is the sequel to the blockbuster 2009 film (which was a prequel to the original “Star Trek” TV series) and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana and Benedict Cumberbatch as the latest villain.
