Going to Yosemite soon? Choose wisely!

Yosemite Valley, California, April

Traffic alert!

A rockslide on January 22 will cause a shutdown of part of Highway 120 that is used by travelers to Yosemite Valley, for more than one month! Starting at 8 AM, February 29 (Leap Day! Look before you leap! :-) ), Calfornia Highway 120, also known as Big Oak Flat Road, will be closed to traffic between the Foresta Road junction and El Portal Road (California Highway 140) junction. This road closure is expected to last until early April.

Yipe!

Yosemite Valley, the park’s most visited area, will remain accessible by other routes. From Merced or Mariposa, take Highway 140. From Fresno or Oakhurst, take Wawona Road (California Highway 41). Note that Foresta Road between Foresta and El Portal will not be accessible.

Those who know California roads also know that, sometimes, there are only a limited number of ways to get to a place, and that an event like a rockslide can add HOURS to your trip!

And to complicate the issue, there are a LOT of cool areas that will still be accessible by Highway 120: “…Yosemite’s Big Oak Flat Entrance Station by way of Groveland, Hodgdon Meadows Campground, the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias, the Merced Grove of Giant Sequoias and the Crane Flat and Hetch Hetchy areas.”

Although highway crews reopened the rockslide-damaged section of Highway 120 five days later, park officials, working with engineers for the Federal Highway Administration, said that the extensive structural damage from the rockslide requires the rebuilding of the highway. The repair crews will work seven days a week, 20 hours a day, to repair the highway before the hoardes 😉 of visitors to Yosemite in the spring and summer!

(Note added 03/10/2012: Big Oak Flat Road should be OPEN today, a MONTH ahead of schedule! Read about it!)
