The Tesla Model X

Last night, Silicon Valley-based Tesla Motors unveiled the Model X (video here).

The sleek vehicle is a cross between an SUV and a minivan, with all-electric, all-wheel drive (optional) and “falcon wing” doors that “articulate” (are “gulls” not “sexy” anymore? :-) ). Tomorrow, people can start reserving their Model Xs, which are estimated to be available late next year with prices in the $55,000 – $75,000 range. Acceleration, 0 to 60 mph, is under 4.4 seconds! So if any of you Facebook employees are wondering what to do with your new cash after the IPO…. :-)

The Tesla X has a FLAT battery pack that goes from the front to rear wheels, under the car. The placement provides a low center of gravity for good handling, but significantly, provides additional interior space, since there is no transmission hump. The optional all-wheel drive version has separate motors – one for the front wheels, one for the back. There are three rows of seats, which can hold seven adults and their luggage!

The electric powertrain under the Model S (1) and now the Model X is expected to be the basis for other variants. At the unveiling of the Model X  in Los Angeles, CEO Elon Musk “…reiterated his desire to make a ‘mass market’ electric vehicle with a lower price, too.”

As Tesla phases out its sales of the Roadster, its financial success rests upon sales of the Model S and Model X.
