Kodak gets out of the camera business!

As I wrote in the “Bio” page of my Web site, my first camera was a Kodak Brownie Holiday Flash.

My parents gave it to me.

Its retail price was $4.95, which my father later told me was “… real money back then.”

CNET News reported today, February 9, 2012 that:

“Eastman Kodak stunned the world today, announcing that it has put an end to its camera business.”

Kodak plans to phase out its digital cameras, pocket video cameras, and digital picture frames. Kodak will focus upon its current brand licensing and on attracting companies that might need some of its patents. Also, Kodak will still offer the online Kodak Gallery service and retail-based photo printing, as well as its inkjet printers.

“For some time, Kodak’s strategy has been to improve margins in the capture device business by narrowing our participation in terms of product portfolio, geographies and retail outlets,” Kodak Consumer Business president Pradeep Jotwani said today in a statement. “Today’s announcement is the logical extension of that process, given our analysis of the industry trends.”

Yeah, that’s the way I read the announcement, too! :-)

Kodak filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month. Kodak plans to emerge from bankruptcy next year and has $950 million in debtor-in-possession financing to get it through the process. Kodak was a PIONEER in the camera business and brought hand-held cameras to consumer customers over a century ago. Kodak remained a leader in imaging technology through much of the 1900s. The market for digital cameras became fragmented with the entry of other competitors and with the emergence of good digital cameras embedded in cell phones.

Kodak currently owns over 1,000 digital imaging patents and is NOT afraid to SUE to protect them!

The CNET article has a slide show of 16 tech gadgets that we once loved but have now abandoned (we’re so fickle! :-) ).
