Three bits of news
There is a lot of California news today, with the start of Macworld Expo in San Francisco. I chose three articles that actually seem to be important, and I ignored some “desperation moves” that seem to be attempts to divert user attention from the Macworld show this week.
1) Steve Jobs explained his weight loss as the result of a homone imbalance. Since the health of Apple is linked so closely to the health of Steve in the minds of some people (it shouldn’t be), the announcement was probably necessary. I disagree with Tom Krazit’s suggestion that the health of Jobs is now a public matter. Jobs chose to make a statement. That’s it.
2) Google has released a beta of Picasa for Mac, as expected. About flippin’ time, Google…. Picasa’s marketing manager was quoted as saying, “We have many Mac users.” More all the time, amigo… more all the time….
3) Apple is reportedly expanding its DRM (digital rights management)-free music deals from just EMI to now include Sony BMG, Universal, and Warner Music. In addition, Apple has reportedly reached agreements with regard to over-the-air downloads. Look for further announcements from Apple, probably RSN (“real soon now”). 
(Note added January 10, 2009: Yep, it happened. I am still thinking about the ramifications of the way that the DRM-free music was implemented.)
