CA unemployment for June 2009: 11.6%

After a revision upward of the previously reported May 2009 unemployment figure of 11.5% to 11.6%, the June 2009 unemployment figure remains unchanged at 11.6% (at least until they revise it upward or downward! :-) ).

Nonfarm payroll jobs declined by 66,500 during the month according to California Employment Development Department (EDD) data from two separate surveys. The U.S. unemployment rate in June was 9.5%.

In June of 2008, California’s unemployment rate was 7.1%. A survey of 42,000 California businesses measured jobs in the economy – the year-over-year change from June 2008 to June 2009 showed a decrease of 766,300 jobs, down 5.1%.

The number of unemployed people in California in June 2009 was 2,146,000 – down by 7000 over the month but up by 850,000 as compared with last year.

Eleven categories: natural resources and mining, construction, manufacturing, trade, transportation and utilities, information, financial activities, professional and business services, educational and health services, leisure and hospitality, other services, and government, all reported job declines over the month, down 66,500 jobs. Professional and business services posted the largest decline for the month, down 13,700 jobs.

Ten of these categories also posted job declines over the YEAR. Education and health services posted job GAINS over the year, up 19,500 jobs, a 1.1% increase.

EDD reported that there were 820,387 people who received regular unemployment insurance benefits during the June survey week, as compared with 839,960 last month and 457,193 last year. New claims for unemployment were 86,016 in June 2009, as compared with 67,579 in May 2009 and 56,359 in June 2008.

As always, the EDD report contains additional detailed statistics, down to the county level. Imperial County had 27.5% unemployment in June, and there was a total of 15 California counties with greater than 15% unemployment!
