Brittany Smith found at San Francisco Safeway

Sometimes, California is the location of much rejoicing.

Sometimes, we share it with Virginia.

This afternoon, a tip from someone in a San Francisco Safeway supermarket led police to Brittany Mae Smith, 12, from Virginia, and her alleged abductor, Jeffery Scott Easley, 32. San Francisco Police Officer, Albie Esparza, said that the two were recognized from the many times that their photos had appeared on CNN.

The two were found outside the store, some 2,300 miles from where the 12-year-old girl was reported missing four days ago, according to Roanoke County, VA police Chief Ray Lavinder. Brittany was turned over to California’s Child Protective Services, had no visible injuries, and has been in touch with family members. She is expected to return to Virginia soon. Easley did not resist arrest.

Whether Brittany Smith traveled willingly with Easley is unknown. On Monday, police issued an Amber Alert for Brittany after finding the body of 41-year-old Tina Smith, Brittany’s mother and Easley’s girlfriend, inside her Salem, VA home. Experts now believe that Tina Smith was killed on the same day that video surveillance cameras spotted Brittany and Easley shopping for a blue dome tent in Walmart in Virginia. Authorities found a tent within walking distance of the store in northern California where the two were found. No one has been arrested in the homicide investigation.

If Easley waives extradition to Virginia, he could return there soon. If he contests the extradition, the process could be delayed for weeks.

Thanks go out to the unnamed hero/heroine who phoned in the tip to San Francisco police.
