Where does an 850-pound emerald “sleep?”

Anywhere it wants to? :-)

The rock is back in Los Angeles, for now… in the custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The Bahia Emerald, weighing in at 850 pounds (180,000-carats; one of the largest ever found) and worth up to $370 million (USD) was reported as stolen from a secured vault in South El Monte, in Los Angeles County in September. There is currently a dispute among a California man who claims ownership, a company with which he contracted to sell the emerald, and a potential buyer.

The Brazilian stone was traced by detectives to a Las Vegas, NV warehouse. The person in possession claimed to be the rightful owner. A federal judge has ordered the sheriff to hold the emerald until the case can be sorted out.

At one time the emerald had been listed on eBay for a “buy it now” price of $75 million. The gory details are in the CNN article linked above.
