Stanford Cancer Center TrueBeam linear accelerator
The Stanford Cancer Center announced today that it is first center on the West Coast and the fifth in the world to offer patients the TrueBeam system, made by Palo Alto, CA-based Varian Medical Systems. By delivering radiation at a faster dose rated, the TrueBeam linear accelerator can shorten individual treatment times by up to half, as compared with treatments using traditional machines.
The TrueBeam system can target cancerous tumor cells more accurately than typical machines as the result of an imaging system that captures views in 60% less time than in earlier systems, which results in less blurry images. Truebeam targets cancerous tissue with a precision of less than a millimeter by checking 100,000 data points ever 10 milliseconds. TrueBeam also monitors tiny movements from breathing, and only emits radiation when the tumor is within a given range.
The result is that treatments that used to take several weeks can be accomplished in days and that more kinds of cancer can be treated with radiation.
