Marijuana grower bust near San Ramon

A marijuana-growing operation was discovered in the East Bay about three weeks ago by helicopter, in a rugged ravine in Las Trampas Regional Park between San Ramon and Moraga.

The following week, officials on foot investigated the site and found irrigation lines and an encampment. This morning, a raid recovered about 1,800 plants, and officials arrested one suspect at the scene while another suspect escaped and is at large.

Officials find growth sites for pot every summer that range in size from 1,800 to 30,000 plants.

(Note added later September 8, 2010: TV news tonight put the estimated street value of the 1,800 marijuana plants found today at approximately $250,000.)
