Gmail: 1 million phone calls on first day

Pent-up demand…? Disruptive innovation…?

Something that you need, for FREE, from someone you might “trust” maybe just a bit more than your telecommunications carrier…? :-)

Google launched the ability to make voice calls to any “traditional” phone number on Wednesday using a blend of Gmail and Google Voice technology. Over 1 million calls were placed from Gmail in just 24 hours!

CNN says:

“For comparison, there are somewhat more than 300 million people in the United States. If the average person makes 10 calls per day–research in 2008 put the number at 208 calls per month–that means about one out of every 3,000 calls in the U.S. went through the service on its first day.”

The technology allows outgoing calls from your computer and reception of incoming calls through your Google Voice number. The service allows free calls in the U.S. and Canada through 2010, and at low cost with other countries.
