Ted Nugent pleads no contest to deer poaching

Rock star Ted Nugent (“Cat Scratch Fever,” [YouTube Video] etc.) has pleaded (NOT “pled”) no contest to two misdemeanor charges of poaching deer in Yuba County. Although Nugent has built a second career as an advocate of hunting and hunting ethics, game wardens “busted” Nugent for illegally killing a young buck deer on his own Outdoor Channel TV show, “Spirit of the Wild.”

Two game wardens saw Nugent kill a “spike” buck (its antlers had not yet forked) with a bow and arrow. It is illegal to kill such a young deer in California.

Wardens also noted that something had been spread on the ground that the deer was eating before it was killed. An investigation showed that it was a commercial bait product called “C’mere Deer.” It is illegal to bait wildlife in California.

A total of 11 charges were filed against Nugent. He eventually pleaded (NOT “pled”) no contest to two misdemeanor counts of baiting a deer and failing to have a deer hunting tag signed by a reviewing official after a kill. He was fined $1,750. (OK, for those who love verbs: it is bleed, bled, bled, but it is plead, pleaded, pleaded.) :-) A buncha “maroons” must have written the article! (People who want to go into writing and editing should pay attention in English classes.) :-)

The deer was killed in El Dorado County, but the charges were eventually filed in Yuba County, where his guide lives. Nugent lives in Texas and still performs. He has several concerts in Southern California this week.

Sorry Ted, I have no qualms about legal hunting and, like you, strongly support our Second Amendment Rights, but poachers should be prosecuted to the max. It is the responsibility of the hunter to know the law. You “got off easy.” (A colloquialism – of COURSE it should be “easily….”)
