Android outsold iPhone in first 6 months of 2010

According to data released today by the Nielsen Company, Google’s Android phones outsold Apple’s iPhones during the first six months of 2010.

As I said after SIMILAR results for the first quarter, “Maybe it’s your network….

Smartphones that run Google’s Android operating system accounted for 27% of all smartphone sales during the period. Apple iPhones accounted for 23% of sales.

(Note added August 4, 2010: Google CEO Eric Schmidt said today that Google believes about 200,000 Android devices are being sold each day.)

CNN says: “Research in Motion — the maker of the business-friendly BlackBerry phones — still leads the smartphone market in the United States.” I usually substitute the word “stodgy” for “business-friendly,” :-) but you may have a different opinion. One-third of the smartphones sold in the last six months run RIM’s operating system.

In spite of the recent advances, Android phones still trail iPhones among U.S. subscribers 13% to 28%. Nielsen attributes this to “brand loyalty,” but I would bet on the apps! (A sentiment shared by Ryan Kim of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer….)

In terms of brand loyalty, Nielsen found:

“Nearly nine in 10 iPhone owners surveyed by Nielsen said they planned to stay with phones on Apple’s operating system when they purchased a new phone. Relatively fewer Android owners — 71 percent — said they planned to do the same, according to the survey of about 2,100 people.

People who own RIM phones were least loyal, with the majority of owners surveyed — 58 percent — saying they want to go to another operating system when they buy a new phone, according to the survey.”

All things come to him who waits — provided he knows what he is waiting for.” – Woodrow Wilson
