Obfuscation: Wireless Keyboards Cracked…
According to a CNET article, the (exclusion-or binary) “protocol” for “securing” some of Microsoft’s wireless keyboards has been cracked (I won’t use the misnomer “hacked”) by the Swiss firm Dreamlab Technologies. Keystroke logging could conceivably be accomplished remotely from 50 meters away with no problem, since the signal is in the citizen’s band. A senior security specialist at Dreamlab described the exclusion-or binary idea as mere “obfuscation” (rather than encryption).
There is an accompanying special report entitled “Securing Microsoft: A long road.” For some of us (and with sincere apologies to the memory of Robert Frost, a native Californian, born in San Francisco), it will be “the road not taken.”
