28 Blue Whales, 34 Humpbacks seen in Monterey Bay
Blue whales, an endangered species, showed up in force in Monterey Bay yesterday during a 2-hour whale-watching trip (video). Some 28 blue whales showed up to eat krill which were present in “miles” of a 200-foot-think (61-m-thick) “layer” of krill in Monterey Bay.
Blue whales, which grow to 100 feet (30.5 m) long, are the largest animals in the world and can eat 4 tons (US short tons; 3629 kg) of krill (40 million krill) per day. The blue whales shared the feast with 34 humpback whales that were also seen by the whale-watching group.
Blue whales number only 10,000 in the world, with about 2,200 off the California Coast.
The narrator of the video described the sight as a “once in a decade” experience!
