The San Mateo-Hayward Bridge

Usually called the San Mateo Bridge, the bridge crosses the San Francisco Bay and connects Foster City on the west with Hayward on the east. The bridge is currently the longest in the San Francisco Bay Area and the 25th longest in the world. When the bridge was completed in 1929, it was the longest bridge in the world. The original bridge was mostly a two-lane causeway with a 300-foot (91-m) vertical-lift span over the shipping channel.

The modern span was constructed in 1967 and carries six lanes of State Route 92. The modern bridge is 7.0 miles (11.3 km) long, with a 1.9-mile (3.1-km) “high-rise” section and and eastern trestle portion that accounts for the remaining 5.1 miles (8.2 km). The shipping channel beneath the high-rise section is 750 feet (229 m) wide and has a vertical clearance of 135 feet (41 m). The bridge carries approximately 93,000 vehicles/day, and as of 2008, there is a $4.00 toll in the west-bound direction only. There are FasTrak lanes, the number of which vary by hour (peak vs. non-peak traffic). FasTrak tolls for the bridge are given here.

Until the completion of the bridge’s widening in January of 2003, the San Mateo Bridge was considered to be the worst evening commute in the Bay Area. The fiscal year 2007-2008 total base tolls collected were $16,564,803 for 14,357,716 toll-paid vehicles.
