$45 million drug bust in San Bernardino County
A tractor trailer truck pulled over for a traffic violation on Wednesday morning in San Bernardino County had problems with its paperwork for the load. After Sheriff’s deputies opened the trailer for inspection, the STRONG SMELL OF MARIJUANA led them to about 20 TONS of drugs on pallets at the back of the load.
All told, there were 38,000 pounds of marijuana, 2,700 pounds of cocaine, and 67 pounds of methamphetamine, worth about $45 million.
Sheriff Rod Hoops said, on Friday night, that the drug seizure was one of the largest in the history of the county.
Fernando Luevano, 32, the truck driver, was arrested and charged with possession, transportation, and sale of narcotics.
(Note added June 29, 2010: For a few dollars more – $579,000 worth of methamphetamine and cocaine were seized at the Calexico border crossing in Imperial County on Saturday.)
