$1 billion Cisco initiative with Russia announced

A $1 billion initiative to drive entrepreneurship and innovation in Russia was announced today at a meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Cisco Systems CEO John Chambers. California Governor Arnold Schwaarzenegger joined Medvedev at a demonstration of Cisco’s video conferencing, business social networking, and sportscasting technology.

Chambers and Viktor Vekselberg, who heads a project to develop a Russian “Silicon Valley” in Skolkovo, near Moscow, signed the agreement today, before the press.

According to SiliconValley.com, the five-phase Cisco initiative will:

Cisco will partner with existing businesses, technology firms, and venture capital organizations to develop projects such as broadband, smart grid, financial services, and social networking.

Also on Mr. Medvedev‘s schedule today were a visit to Twitter, where he registered and sent his first “tweet,” Apple, and delivery of a speech at Stanford.

(Note added June 28, 2010: The are many ways to obtain information and technology. Less than a week after Russian President Dmitry Medvedev left the United States, federal agents arrested 10 people who have been accused of being long-term recruiters for spies for Russia in the U.S. Some of those arrested were long-term residents. According CNN: “Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Farbiarz said search warrants in the case were being executed ‘across the country.’ He called the initial criminal complaint ‘the tip of the iceberg.'” CNET has an article on some of the high-tech tricks used by the alleged Russian agents. Who knows, maybe in the coming days we will learn about some of the high-tech surveillance tricks that the FBI used in the case, too!)
