California boy is youngest to climb Mount Everest
Jordan Romero, aged 13, from Big Bear, California (1, 2?) became the youngest climber to reach the top of Mount Everest today! The climb was tracked through GPS coordinates in his blog as the team ascended to the summit, 29,028 feet (8,847 m) above sea level.
Romero left for the peak of Everest from the Chinese side of the mountain, because Nepal had denied him permission on the grounds of age. He was accompanied by his father Paul Romero, stepmother Karen Lundgren, and three Sherpas called Ang, Dawa and Kharma.
Before today, the youngest climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest was Temba Tsheri of Nepal, aged 16.
Jordan Romero has climbed six of the seven highest peaks on seven continents, known as the Seven Summits. Romero’s family started with Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania at 19,341 feet (5,895 meters), when he was just nine. Since the tallest mountain in Oceania is (Kosciuszko in mainland Australia or Carstensz Pyramid in Indonesia), Romero’s family climbed them both.
The last remaining peak of the Seven Summits for Romero yet to climb is the Vinson Massif in Antarctica (16,067 feet; 4,897 meters).
A trip to the Vinson Massif is planned for December.
