We’re all mad here…

I looked in vain for statistics on the happiness of high-tech workers in the November 26, 2007 edition of Time magazine. Among the happiest of people were the clergy and firefighters, and the least happy were gas-station attendants. Perhaps Time was wise enough not to poll tech workers.

According to the article, Americans receive (and take) less vacation time than any other Western nation. The average income of 99% of Americans has been almost flat (8% increase) since 1980. The income of the top 1% of Americans has increased 177% during that period. The income of the top 0.1% of Americans has increased 308% during that period, and the income of the top 0.01% of Americans has increased 408% during that period. In 2005, the top 0.01% consisted of 14,588 taxpayers making more than $9.6 million per year and this group controlled 5.1% of all U.S. income.

Do you see a pattern here? :-)

Amazingly, 9 out of 10 Americans say that they are moderately or very satisfied with their job.

Money cannot buy happiness (nobody has ever made this claim for vacation time). :-) The Cat may very well have been right!
