The LA homicide interactive map

LA is an interesting town. :-)

Apparently, folks there don’t like Nazis very much, :-) having beaten two of the approximately 40 white supremacists rallying on the lawn of Los Angeles City Hall today. The rally (for Hitler‘s birthday on the 20th?), which was conducted by the National Socialist Movement, drew counter-protestors who included a wide assortment of African American, Jewish, Latino, immigrants-rights and anarchist groups. Five counter-protestors were arrested for throwing eggs and rocks. Don’t get me wrong – I am all for the right to peacefully assemble and for freedom of speech – even for Nazis – I just think that the reaction of the crowd might indicate that the message was not particularly well-received. :-)

John Belushi‘s statement, “I hate Illinois Nazis,” from The Blues Brothers, rings in my mind (video).

I still don’t see how ANYONE can be a racist in California, but we have them. We probably have racists from all over the world. :-) (Note added April 25, 2010: See, things that SHOULD be impossible are often NOT! :-) )

One feature of the LA Times online that I found morbidly fascinating is an interactive map showing 2,747 homicides in Los Angeles County from January 1, 2007 to April 12, 2010. The map can scroll and has circular zones with diameters determined by the number of homicides in the area. You can view the map by year, and when you select the name of a victim (listed with age and date),  a news story about the death appears, as well as key facts and a Google Map.

I could see where such a map might aid researchers. Law enforcement probably has its own tools. The map could also aid tourists and others who may not be familiar with areas and neighborhoods of LA.
