Actor John Forsythe dead at 92

Actor John Forsythe died Thursday in Santa Ynez, California, from complications from pneumonia after a year-long fight against cancer. He was 92 years old.

Forsythe was the voice of the never-seen “Charlie” in the TV series and movies (1, 2) “Charlie’s Angels.” He also played the oil magnate Blake Carrington in the TV series, “Dynasty,” for which he received two Golden Globe Awards for best actor. In the 1950s, he played the single playboy father Bentley Gregg in the sitcom, “Bachelor Father,” for which he was nominated for several Emmy Awards from 1957 to 1962.

Forsythe, born John Lincoln Freund in 1918 in Penn’s Grove, PA, was the son of a Wall Street businessman. After he attended the University of North Carolina, Forsythe moved to New York City and became a radio announcer and the field announcer for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Forysthe’s Broadway appearances led to his Hollywood debut with Cary Grant in “Destination Tokyo.”

Forsythe enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II and then performed in many Broadway plays after the war, before he moved to Los Angeles.

Forsythe worked in a number of feature films, including “The Captive City,” “It Happens Every Thursday,” “The Glass Web,” and two Alfred Hitchcock films, “The Trouble with Harry” and “Topaz.” He also starred in “The Ambassador’s Daughter,” “Madame X,” Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood,” “The Happy Ending,” “And Justice For All” and “Scrooged.”

Forsythe is survived by his wife, three children, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
