Give me Liberty…
The Liberty Belle is a B-17 “Flying Fortress” bomber from World War II that will be making a two-week tour through Southern California, starting February 27-28 in San Diego County (photo of San Diego is above). (The LA Times link has a BEAUTIFUL shot of the B-17 flying over the Golden Gate, with the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands in the background!)
You can book half-hour rides on this B-17 for $430 per person. As of February 24, about 70 of the 98 available spaces for February 27-28 are already booked, according to Scott Maher, director of operations for the Liberty Foundation, a Tulsa, OK-based nonprofit group that operates the bomber.
Reservations are accepted by phone at (918) 340-0243. Seven people can ride on each flight.
For free, you can watch the Liberty Belle take off and land, and tour the bomber after the last flight of the day. According to the LA Times article:
The flights raise money for the Liberty Foundation which honors war veterans, preserves aviation history, and educates the public about “the high price of freedom.”
