Magnitude 5.9 quake off Humboldt Coast
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake struck at 12:20 PM today, abou 35 miles northwest of the community of Petrolia and almost 50 miles west of Eureka, off the coast of Humboldt County, California. The shaking was felt within a 150-mile radius, as far north as Southern Oregon and as far south as Sonoma County. The USGS map with the location of the magnitude 5.9 earthquake location is here.
Residents reported a rolling sensation that shook items from walls and shelves. The quake did not seem as strong as the magnitude 6.5 quake that struck the region on January 9 and caused more than $40 million in damages and one serious injury to an elderly woman, who broke her hip.
The Humboldt County spokesman, Phil Smith-Hanes, said that the Office of Emergency Services had not received any reports of injuries or major damages. A seismologist at USGS reported that today’s quake was not officially an aftershock of the January 9 quake, because it occurred on a different fault, but that it may possibly have been triggered by the earlier quake.
The northern coast of California is the most seismically active region of the state, but its lower population reduces the potential for injuries and damages.
