Browser Wars: The saga continues

There is just WAY too much important news in technology today, so I will start with browsers. Since Apple, Google, and Mozilla are Silicon Valley entities (even Microsoft has an encampment there), I’ll mention the browser story tonight.

Back in September of 2009, I wrote an entry called “Browser Wars II: The wrath of Mozilla.” CNET has again followed the Net Applications’ monthly usage share figures: No. 1 Internet Explorer (IE) and No. 2 Firefox each slipped from their December numbers. IE was down from 62.7 percent to 62.2 percent, and Firefox was down from from 24.6 to 24.4 percent. Chrome climbed from 4.6 to 5.2%, and Safari stayed “constant” at around 4.5%.

Interestingly, Firefox use overwhelms IE use among visitors to cheshirecatphoto.com. Also, college-educated users are over-represented among my visitors. Coincidence? :-)

The CNET article notes that, in the usage stats, IE 6 and IE 8 have CHANGED PLACES! IE 6 was slightly favored in December, IE 8’s share was 22.3% and IE 6’s, 20.1%. In comparison, Firefox 3.5 is at 17.1%.

According to CNET, IE 6 use is still common because the popular Windows XP includes that version of IE, but top complaints about IE 6 “include low security, missing features, and slow performance for Web-based JavaScript programs.

Last week, Google announced that it is discontinuing support for IE 6 on Google Docs, and today, a Web developer petitioned the U.K. government to stop using IE 6 internally, noting the move by German and French governments to encourage people to “upgrade away” from IE 6, as is Microsoft, itself.
