Thanksgiving, and Mumbai
Firstly, I would like to extend heartfelt sympathies to my Indian friends and others with relatives or loved ones involved in the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India. It was no coincidence that the attacks took place in the Indian financial and entertainment center. The locations and the timing were chosen carefully, I am sure. The eve of the American holiday of Thanksgiving provided an opportunity for many Americans to absorb about four days of media coverage of the aftermath, before heading back to their jobs.
Worldwide, we must all resist the tendencies that are too natural for some – to be driven by fear. In Mumbai, people driven by fear ran toward other terrorists who slaughtered them, like hunters waiting for flushed pheasants. I believe very much in the statement from the Bene Gesserit “Litany against fear,” that “Fear is the mind-killer.” As for those whose goal is safety, I would say that the world has never been a safe place, and never will be. We must all work together to make the world even more unsafe for terrorists than it is for the rest of us.
For those of you who celebrated Thanksgiving today, I hope that victims of terrorists were also in your thoughts and prayers. The increasingly smaller world that we all share is facing many crises right now, crises that will require humans to act together to resolve. Whether the crisis is worldwide finance, or global warming, or global terrorism, that crisis affects us all.
As we give thanks for the blessings of the past, let us prepare to rise to the great challenges before all of us.
