Give blood

In California’s Bay Area, there always seems to be a shortage of blood. This fact is interesting to me because Bay Area residents are so generous in so many other ways.

Today, I went to the Pleasanton Center of the Bay Area Red Cross to contribute a little A-positive, as part of my regular donation schedule. There are a lot of reasons to give blood – a chief one being that donation of a single unit can save up to three lives. Also, there are many reasons that people cannot be donors – from some of the obvious medical conditions to other things like waiting a certain number of months after getting a tattoo or piercing, to taking certain prescribed medicines, to living in certain countries for more than a few weeks during a particular range of years (for the curious – this relates to Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, prions, and Mad Cow Disease).

As we move into the high-accident-rate holiday season, give “the gift of life” to someone in need. It is a precious gift that will not dent your pocketbook in these very tough economic times. The American Red Cross, and all of the people it helps, will thank you for it.
