SF Pier 39 sea lions: On vacation?

Many of the sea lions that normally blissfully float around on rafts near Pier 39 in San Francisco have “disappeared” with only about a dozen there today! (There are usually many, many more!)

Experts do not believe that they have died, since there would be a lot of other evidence. Experts speculate that the departure may be related to food scarcity or just a desire to “get out of here.” :-)

One tourist speculated that the sea lions are on vacation. Pier 39’s sea lions are one of the many attractions, and a subject for photography by thousands of tourists.

The sea lions originally showed up just prior to the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 (… to get front-row seats?), and have been there ever since, until now!
