Fire on Angel Island
A wildfire that started about 8 PM PDT on Sunday, October 12, 2008, and which had spread to 380 acres on Angel Island in San Francisco Bay is now 75% contained. The acreage that was charred by the fire amounted to more than half of the island.

Scores of historic structures, some of which dated back to the Civil War, were spared, through the persistent and heroic action of firefighters. Angel Island, which is a state park, had planned to give journalists a preview of a $15 million restoration of the Angel Island Immigration Station on Tuesday, but that event is canceled.
The island will be closed to visitors for about one to two weeks. Some more photos of the fire are on the CNN site.
(Note added on October 18, 2008: Local TV news announced that Angel Island will reopen to visitors this Monday, October 20, but some areas of the island will still be “off limits.”)
