Stanford: Ethanol is not the answer

Diana Ginnegaugh, a doctoral candidate at Stanford, says that there is a fundamental problem with burning ethanol as compared with gasoline – the increase in ozone formation and urban air pollution.

Acid aldehyde emissions (precursors of ozone formation) increased almost 2300% when using ethanol instead of gasoline.

NASA, the EPA, and the Department of Energy have funded research at Stanford in modeling the use of E-85, a common blend of gasoline and ethanol.
