Snow way! Sway!

A rare “dusting” of snow fell in the Bay Area this morning, down to a level of about 350 feet of elevation.

There was about a millimeter :-) of snow in my backyard this morning, at 465 feet, and snow on our (colder) windshields. The snow was about as low as I remember seeing it at any time during our almost-20-years in Livermore, California. Weather service forecasters agreed.

A strong storm front will bring chilly temperatures to the Bay Area for much of the week.

At 1:30 PM today, a mixture of rain, sleet, and hail (YUCK!) fell for about 10 minutes in San Francisco. A friend in San Francisco confirmed hail.

Mount Hamilton got six inches of snow. At Mount Diablo (1) rangers closed the roads to the 3849-foot mountain at the entrance gates.

Even this afternoon, there was snow in the Altamont, snow in the Ohlone Wilderness south of Livermore, vestiges of snow on Black Hill, and a cloud covered the two peaks of Mount Diablo. Pleasanton Ridge had snow this morning, but most of it was gone by afternoon.

The snow was quite a treat for schoolchildren, many of whom had not seen snow this low in their lives. For people like me, who lived most of their lives in the Midwest, the snow brought back fond (and not-so-fond) memories. :-)

Happy Holidays!
