Black and Blue? :-)
Microsoft, which had previously admitted that its Vista operating system was still suseptible to remotely-triggered “Blue Screen of Death” attacks (1), said Monday that it is investigating reports that its latest security updates are causing some serious problems for certain users. The problem has been called the “black screen of death” because the users who are affected are left with a black desktop and not much else!
The British security firm Prevx noted the issue on its blog on Friday, and offered a fix for the problem. According to Prevx, “After logging on there is no desktop, task bar, system tray or sidebar. Instead you are left with a totally black screen and a single My Computer Explorer window.” Prevx suggested that the black screen can occur on a wide variety of Windows machines from Windows NT through Windows 7. Prevx said that there appear to be many causes for the black screen, and not all are related to the security updates. Prevx “identified at least 10 different scenarios whick will trigger the same black screen conditions. These appear to have been around for years now.”
Microsoft released its latest security updates on November 10 and issued six bulletins that addressed 15 flaws.
