Put on a happy face…

Researchers at McGill University in Montreal (yes, that is where the early experiments on LSD were conducted) have developed the MindHabits Trainer Game in which users try to find one smiling face in a grid with 15 frowning faces.

The users who played the “find the smile” game every day for a week before starting their shift (as telemarketers) were less stressed, had higher self esteem, made more sales, and had 17% lower levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. Results of the study appear in the October issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

The concept is that repetitive playing trains the mind to focus on the positive aspects of life. I have found that photographing nature seems to work for me, but I have not tested my cortisol levels. :-)

The game can be found online at www.mindhabits.com, available as a free trial version, or for $19.99 for the full version.

If this works, most of the people with whom I have worked could use it. :-)

I just tried the link to play the free trial game, and the registration form wanted to know my name, birthday, birthplace, email, and “favorite color” – a bit like an overly inquisitive Guardian of the “Bridge of Death.”

Maybe I should wait until the game is available in stores, and I can pay cash and remain anonymous…
