And now for something completely disastrous :-)

The Bay Bridge that joins Oakland and San Francisco is CLOSED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS!

(Note added October 31, 2009: The Bay Bridge is STILL closed in both directions. We’re hoping for Monday!)

The Bay Bridge (also legally unknown as the James “Sunny Jim” Rolph Bridge) is CLOSED for repairs after a cable from the newly repaired eyebar section of the bridge FELL INTO TRAFFIC this evening! Fortunately, there were no serious injuries. The occupant of a Ryder truck sustained minor injuries when the cable hit the truck and shattered glass.

Both the upper and lower deck of the bridge will be closed until further notice. There is a design group and an engineering team in place. The accident occurred just east of the new S-curve.

The repairs of a cracked I-beam during the Labor Day Weekend, near the high point of the cantilever section, apparently came undone. Westbound traffic came to a standstill throughout the evening commute.

The span was closed officially at 8 PM. A video of the accident and resultant traffic is here.

Disastrous? The Bay Bridge normally carries 270,000 vehicles/DAY!
