Trust me. :-)

I enjoyed watching the new Macintosh ads, “Broken Promises” and “Teeter Tottering”, on CNET, but TODAY I read this little horror story at fortune.cnn.com about some college students who took up Microsoft on their $29 (I mentioned it here.) electronic version of Windows 7 Home Edition, which was sold for Microsoft by Digital River. (BTW, “Teeter Tottering” is SO close to the story of a Facebook Friend of mine who very recently had a major Windows disaster that we almost expected HER to be co-starring with Mac and PC! :-) )

The version doesn’t seem to install properly on some machines running 32-bit Vista. Apparently, “the download files weren’t properly packaged, or something, and when some users tried to “unload the box” they got an error that read:

We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this applicatioin was downloaded”

Well… less than three hours after the new operating system launched, a discussion thread with the error message as the title began on Microsoft Answers‘ Windows 7 install forum. By Saturday morning, the article had over 500 replies and had been read almost 44,000 times!

According to the Fortune article, Microsoft technicians had been pointing users to a 5-step Download Squad workaround (reproduced in the Fortune article, with other helpful suggestions) that “might be enough to send students screaming to the nearest Apple Store.” :-) The article speculates that the entire incident could wind up in a Macintosh ad soon.

When my kids were in school, I gave them MacBooks. (Note added October 31, 2009: Actually one was a MacBook, and one was the MacBook’s predecessor, the iBook.)

Nobody needs a crash or viral infection before final exams. Trust me. :-)
