Big Sur tourist cheats death

Big Sur

In keeping with an overall positive tone in this blog, I wanted to let folks know about the survival of a 20-year-old male tourist from Winsdorf, Germany. The tourist had been tossing a football with friends at a “pullout” in Big Sur that was 400 feet (122 m) above the Pacific Ocean.

After a bad toss, the young man climbed over the edge to retrieve the football and slid 250 feet (76 m) down a cliff.

Monterey County Sheriff’s Department personnel rappelled down the cliff and rescued the tourist, who escaped with facial and other cuts and abrasions. A Sheriff’s Department sergeant said that the man is lucky to be alive.

Please be careful along California’s coast. Unstable edges of cliffs and tides that can trap hikers against cliffs add to the dangers of the coastal environment.
