Magnitude 7.8 earthquake near Solomon Islands

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued an expanding regional tsunami warning and watch for parts of the Pacific near the epicenter of a magnitude 7.8 earthquake, which was in the ocean 160 miles (260 km) south of Lata, Santa Cruz Islands in the Temotu Province of the Solomon Islands. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

A tsunami advisory has been issued for Hawaii, and the earthquake event will be evaluated for possible elevation of the tsunami threat level.

The Santa Cruz Islands are 1200 miles west of the Samoan Islands, on which more than 165 people were killed last week from earthquake and tsunami.
