The Silver Strand

Silver Strand Beach

The Silver Strand is an 8-mile-long (12.9-km-long) isthmus in San Diego County that connects Coronado “Island” on the north with Imperial Beach on the south.

The Silver Strand is popular with Navy SEALS (for training), campers, surfers, swimmers, fishermen, jet skiers, body boarders, civilian sailors, and beach volleyball enthusiasts. There is a 10-mile bike path that is used by bicyclists, skaters, joggers and walkers. There is a 2.5-mile (4-km) beach (shown above) on the ocean side of the strand. The side of the strand on San Diego Bay can be reached from the ocean side by underground pedestrian tunnels and has a nature preserve that we also visited. The nature preserve shelters many kinds of shorebirds. The smoother and warmer water of the bay side is popular for sailing and swimming.

Almost any of the waters of the San Diego area seem quite warm to someone from the San Francisco Bay Area, since our ocean water is usually around 53 deg F (12 deg C), plus or minus a few degrees F, year round! :-)
