Clods and monsters…

I considered writing about these (alleged) Bay Area monsters from Antioch for just a few minutes tonight. Then I decided that, if you want to focus on human depravity, you can follow the link and read as much as you can stand.

I decided instead to write about a different kind of good news, about those telemarketer clods (definition 2) who send robocalls to our phones. Beginning on Tuesday, September 1, 2009, businesses that advertise products with automated and unsolicited phone calls will face fines of up to $16,000 per call (nice! :-) ), according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

(Note added September 11, 2009: Have you noticed that the robocalls have stopped? :-) It is AMAZING what a $16-Grand/call fine will do! :-) )

Regrettably, :-) calls from politicians, public service announcements, and “information” calls will be exempt from the new rule, as will banks, telephone carriers (don’t even get me started on these two groups :-) ), and most charitable organizations.

You can report questionable robocalls at the FTC complaint Web site or by calling 1-877-FTC-HELP!

The ban applies ONLY to pre-recorded calls, and people are encouraged to sign up for the federal “Do Not Call” Registry for additional protection.

If you LIKE to receive calls from telemarketers, you can give companies written permission to contact you.
