Bigger window for Mavericks

The contest window for Mavericks, the surfing competition at Half Moon Bay/Princeton-by-the-Sea ouside Pillar Point Harbor, notable for its 40-foot (12.2 m) waves and its 24-hour notice, will now begin November 1 instead of January 8. In 1999, the first notification of world-class surfers went out giving 24-hours to get to Half Moon Bay and compete for the $150,000 prize. Last winter, there was no Mavericks competition because the right surf conditions existed in November 2008 – OUTSIDE the window for the competition of January 8, 2009 – March 31, 2009. The right surf conditions did not recur within the window.

Another change – former director Jeff Clark is leaving. Chief executive for  Mavericks Surf Ventures, Kier Beadline, said that it was a mutual decision. The longer window for Mavericks will maximize the opportunity for the surfers.

Besides, the Mavericks competition is now a BIG DEAL, watched by literally MILLIONS of people.
