Virus hits FBI and U.S. Marshals Service

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Marshals Service had to shut down parts of their networks today after a mysterious computer virus infected them, according to the Associated Press.

The U.S. Marshals Service disconnected from the Justice Department computers as a precaution after being infected. An FBI spokesperson would only confirm that the FBI experienced similar issues on its external, unclassified network, which were also affecting several other government agencies.

Both agencies shut down access to the Internet and to email while the issue was evaluated. The type and origin of the virus are unknown.

I guess that what I would want to know is: Is this a Windows virus?

(Note added May 24, 2009: If the infection resulted from a Windows virus, I have a small suggestion…. :-) Patient: “Doctor, it hurts when I keep banging my head against the wall.” Doctor: “Stop banging your head against the wall.” :-) Meanwhile, the U.S. Army has announced plans to move from Windows XP to Windows Vista (yep, Vista!) by the end of the year. Army intelligence? :-) This may be another strong argument for protecting the Second Amendment Rights of individual American citizens. :-) )
