The Bay Lights will return to the Bay Bridge!

Bay Bridge, western section

Thank goodness!

For those of you who are unaware of the Bay Lights, SFGate.com reminds us:

The Bay Lights were originally conceived as a two-year installation of ever-changing display of computer-generated patterns on the western Bay Bridge span created by artist Leo Villareal. The project was funded by the organization Illuminate the Arts.

In 2014, Caltrans offered to maintain the lights on a permanent basis if Illuminate the Arts could raise $4 million for the materials and installation costs. With a $2 million donation from Peninsula philanthropist Ted Taube, the group was able to raise the funds.

The new lights have been made of  a more durable materials to withstand the bay’s cool, moist winds.

“The whole region should take pride that we have a work of art that’s envied around the world, eight times the size of the Eiffel Tower, right in our own backyard,” Ben Davis of Illuminate the Lights told CBS San Francisco.

Now, construction workers have been installing over 25,000 LED lights on the Bay Bridge western span by scaling the bridge’s 300 cables at night. If you have never seen the Bay Lights (they are spectacular!), SFGate.com has a slide show to give you an idea of how they look. The Lights will be turned on January 30, just in time for Super Bowl 50!

Plan a trip to the Bay Area to see them yourself!
