Woman falls down cliff near McWay Falls and drowns.

McWay Falls, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, Big Sur

A 20-year-old woman, Medina Faraz, from Union City, slid down a cliff near McWay Falls (my image above) at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park in Big Sur and drowned in the ocean on Friday.

Faraz was climbing down and around a cliff near the falls, without the proper gear or clothing when she fell.

KSBW TV reports the preliminary cause of death is drowning. Faraz’s body was recovered, and the death is being investigated by a detective for the Monterey County Coroner.

For the record, the park does not allow visitors to hike down to the beach at McWay Falls, and trails are structured to DISCOURAGE it. Please be careful when exploring California. Have the right equipment and clothing and ALWAYS let someone else know where you are going and when you expect to be back. Please stay on trails. Park railings and warning signs are there for your protection. Parents, please keep young children near you and under your control.

Don’t turn your adventure in California into a tragedy.
