Woman from the Netherlands survives plunge above Upper Yosemite Fall!

Yosemite Falls, Yosemite National Park

Yosemite Falls

This weekend, a 28-year-old woman from the Netherlands fell 25 feet while hiking about 100 yards off the trail above Upper Yosemite Fall! She landed on a granite slab beside the creek and suffered a major pelvic injury that prevented her from walking, and she had to be evacuated by helicopter. Her accident occurred just above where Upper Yosemite Falls plunges 1,400 feet (the ENTIRE drop is 2,700 feet)!

The SFGate.com article says:

The visitor was taken by helicopter to Ahwahnee Meadow, where an ambulance drove her to a hospital outside the park, according to the California Highway Patrol. She was initially described as conscious and alert but thought to have suffered a fractured pelvis.

“There’s only two bones in your body when broken that you can actually die from: the pelvis and your femur,” said CHP Officer Johnny Fisher, whose agency furnished the helicopter for the rescue. “That’s what elevated this response.”

The SFGate.com article INCLUDES a DRAMATIC VIDEO of the rescue taken by California Highway Patrol (CHP) FROM THE HELICOPTER that shows the extraction of the woman from the canyon above the falls, a rugged area that most of us will never see and (hopefully) NEVER from the view of a helicopter!

Tenaya Canyon above Yosemite Falls was supposedly CURSED by Chief Tenaya, after a battalion of soldiers killed his youngest son while removing the Native Americans from the valley. The plunge pool at the bottom of the falls was believed to be inhabited by the spirits of several witches called the Poloti. Read my Blog entry about Yosemite Falls here!
